Week of June 16, 2025: From the Streets to the Capitol
Channel the ‘No Kings’ Momentum into Congressional Action.
Each week, we’re sharing one issue you can call your representatives about to take action! This will take you less than 5 minutes.
Why It’s Important: Calling your representatives about the issues you care about is important, even if they don't typically support those causes, because it demonstrates that their constituents are engaged and paying attention. Every call is a record of public opinion, and consistent pressure from voters can influence decision-making, shift priorities, and create accountability. Even if they don't agree with your stance, representatives may soften their opposition, consider compromise, or at least acknowledge the importance of the issue to those they serve. Persistence in advocacy ensures your voice is part of the larger democratic process.
CALL YOUR REPS THIS WEEK: From the Streets to the Capitol
What We’re Calling About: This past weekend, on June 14, 2025, the “No Kings” protests erupted in roughly 2,300 cities and towns across the United States—part of the largest single-day demonstrations since the start of Trump’s second term, with organizers estimating over 13 million participants voicing opposition to his policies and the coinciding U.S. Army 250th Anniversary Parade on his 79th birthday.
Why We’re Calling: At present, U.S. democracy is imperiled by a confluence of authoritarian executive overreach, systemic voter suppression, and pervasive disinformation campaigns eroding public trust and the rule of law. This weekend’s “No Kings” protests—with millions mobilizing peacefully in thousands of communities—showcased the public’s refusal to accept the unchecked concentration of power, signaling a robust groundswell ready to defend democratic norms.
Why We’re Calling Now: These protests, mobilizing millions in thousands of cities from coast to coast, have crystallized an unprecedented groundswell of opposition to Trump’s authoritarian impulses. What began as scattered demonstrations quickly morphed into a unified movement—peaceful human banners on beaches, packed town squares, and mass turnouts even in the toughest conditions—all underscoring a shift from anger to determined hope. But at the same time, we saw horrific violence, with the murder of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted murder of Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife. We must harness this momentum by calling our senators and representatives today: demand they defend democratic norms, oppose executive overreach, condemn violence and stand firm against any erosion of checks and balances under Trump’s second term.
What We’re Saying:
📞 Call Script: Stand Up for Democracy
[Greeting]
Hello, my name is [Your Full Name], and I am a constituent from [Your City/State]. I am calling to urge Representative/Senator [Last Name] about the urgent defense of our democracy following this weekend’s ‘No Kings’ protests.
[State Your Concern]
Over 2,000 communities and millions of Americans mobilized peacefully this past Saturday to reject authoritarian overreach and defend our constitutional norms. Yet we also experienced unspeakable violence: in Minnesota, State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered, and State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were gravely wounded in politically motivated assassination attempts targeting elected officials. Elsewhere, even peaceful marches saw tear gas deployments and isolated arrests—protesters faced risks simply for exercising their First Amendment rights.
[Make Your Request]
I respectfully urge Senator [Senator's Last Name] to do two things: first, that you unequivocally condemn the horrific political violence we saw, including the murder and attempted murder of Minnesota elected officials and the unauthorized and unlawful use of the National Guard in Los Angeles; and second, that you stand firm against any executive power grabs, opposing actions or legislation that would expand unchecked presidential authority and defending the checks and balances that underpin our democracy.
The sheer scale of the “No Kings” protests—millions of Americans taking to the streets in over 2,000 communities to reject authoritarian overreach —combined with the horrendous, politically motivated violence that saw Minnesota legislators murdered and wounded , sends an unambiguous message: the country will not stand by while our democracy is eroded. You have a choice this week—to side with the peaceful majority demanding accountability and respect for our constitutional checks and balances, or to cower before unchecked executive power. It’s time represent US by standing up to any Trump administration power grabs, and make clear that political violence and authoritarianism have no home in America.
[Closing]
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my concerns. I appreciate your service and hope you will stand up for our democracy.
